How to determine the IP address of a computer or website?

Tip: This document is for someone wanting the IP address of another computer or website and not how to find the IP address of your own computer.

To determine the IP address of another computer or website, you must either know the computer name or domain name and use the ping command to ping the computer and obtain its IP address. For example, in Microsoft Windows, a user would open an MS-DOS command window and type ping<computer>, where <computer> is the computer name or domain name.

In the example below, we are pinging the computerhope.com domain name.

C:\>ping computerhope.com

Pinging computerhope.com [69.72.169.241] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 69.72.169.241: bytes=32 time=64ms TTL=53
Reply from 69.72.169.241: bytes=32 time=64ms TTL=53

Ping statistics for 69.72.169.241:

    Minimum = 64ms, Maximum = 65ms, Average = 64ms

As you can see in the above example, the IP address 69.72.169.241 is the IP address of the computerhope.com domain at the time this address was pinged.
